We’re delighted that research conducted under the umbrella of the BTRU is featured in an upcoming BBC documentary. Heart Transplant: A Chance to Live will be screened on BBC2 at 9.00pm on Monday 14 May 2018. The programme, which was filmed at the Institute of Transplantation in Newcastle, follows seven patients all in desperate need of a new heart and looks at the challenges they face in light of the chronic shortage of donor hearts available for transplant. The film explores machine perfusion technology, where organs are resuscitated and reanimated outside the body, as one answer to the donor organ shortage. Programme-makers spent an afternoon with BTRU Deputy Director Andy Fisher and his team in the lab and filmed them undertaking a training lung perfusion procedure. This was a great opportunity for Prof Fisher to explain more about organ perfusion technology and how it could impact on clinical transplantation in the future.
